THE HSA AT RACE RETRO 2008
18/03/2008
For its fifth consecutive appearance at Stoneleigh Park’s excellent Race Retro – adjudged by many to be the best yet – the HSA’s stand was once again the focal point and a popular meeting place for hillclimbers and sprinters throughout the three days of the show. For them, and perhaps even more for the uninitiated, the big-screen TV showing a wide range of Brayspeed DVDs throughout the show was a big draw. We had plenty of enquiries from potential hillclimb and sprint competitors who were also well served with copies of Steve Wilkinson and Phil Short’s Hillclimbing and Sprinting – The Essential Manual, with the co-authors on hand to help out on the stand and sell copies of their popular book. This year’s show car was Henryk Koslowski’s successful Jedi-Yamaha which also attracted much interest, and the background shots that decorated the stand came, as ever, from the Midland hills via the lens of Roger McDonald’s antique, but superbly effective Linhof camera.
The HSA would like to thank the many volunteers who set up the stand and who manned it over the three days of the show, which included Tony Bray, Peter Curtis, Grant Cratchley, Henryk Koslowski, Phil Short, Jerry Sturman, Alan Terry, and Steve Wilkinson.

02/03/2008
We will be holding an informal meeting for HSA members in the South West at the Cross Hands hotel and pub on the A46 at Old Sodbury South Gloucestershire from 7:00 pm on Thursday March 20th.
At least two committee members (Fyrth Cross and Chris Bennett) will be present and we are using this event to gauge the level of interest in the ‘regional meeting’ concept, particularly in the close season. If the idea is popular we hope to extend it to other regions and make it a regular feature.
The Cross Hands is conveniently located just off Junction 18 of the M4 and only about 15 minutes from Junction 14 of the M5.

On-line entries for Gurston Down
24/01/2008
From the start of the 2008 Season it will be possible to enter and pay for meetings at Gurston via the Internet. Using this method is very much encouraged by the organisers and there is no extra charge to the competitor – they will absorb the bank fees. The reasons for doing this are to save a large volume of paper and cost of printing and postage.

New HSA President & Chairman announced
10/12/2007
With effect December 2007, Chris Bennett takes over as the new HSA Chairman. "Chris is, of course, a regular competitor which gives him an invaluable insight into the requirements of HSA members." said outgoing Chairman Paul Richardson. "He has been doing a great job for the Association for some while now, not only running our website but also as Vice-Chairman."
"I’ve now been Chairman for over four years and I think it’s time for someone with fresh ideas and enthusiasm for this time-consuming role, both of which Chris has in abundance, to take over the reins. I will, of course, be maintaining my links with the HSA as Speed Championship Co-ordinator, assisted by Peter Hubbard, and I’d like to thank the committee for asking me to continue as President of the Association."
Paul takes over the President’s role from Ben Boult, who now joins the Association’s list of illustrious Vice-Presidents.

Stunner tyre reprieve
06/12/2007
Good news for competitors in Roadgoing classes who use Stunner List 1A tyres.
The following text was received to-day in an email from John Ryan of the MSA:
"I am pleased to confirm that following agreement with the manufacturer the Stunner Scudo and Torneo tyres have now been re-entered on to tyre list 1A of the 2008 MSA competitors yearbook. The amendment will not be published in the yearbook as it has already gone to print however notice will be given to Scrutineers via the Scrutineers news letter and an amendment will be published in the Spring edition of Motor Sports Now magazine."
It is good to see common sense prevail and that the MSA is listening to the concerns of competitors.

HAT-TRICK FOR PRIAULX
23/11/2007
Congratulations to former British Hillclimb Champion Andy Priaulx on winning his third consecutive FIA World Touring Car Championship. The 33-year-old Guernseyman completed his WTCC hat-trick with victory on the streets of Macau on 18 November.
After taking the 1995 British Hillclimb title with a maximum score - at the age of 21 - Andy went on to another clean sweep by winning all 13 rounds of the Renault Spider sports car series. Further success came in the British Formula 3 and Touring Car Championships before he graduated to the world's premier touring car series.
‘No-one should be in any doubt about the quality of Andy's achievements’, said MSA Chief Executive Colin Hilton. ‘He has repeatedly taken on the very best touring car drivers in the world and emerged victorious. He is fully deserving of the recognition that his success brings and those within the sport appreciate his professionalism and dedication. His success is a fine example to young British drivers currently cutting their teeth in UK motor sport as to what can be achieved on the world stage’.

ALDON HSA Championship 2007 Top Three
24/10/2007
First John Bradshaw (Striker Toyota) |
Second Steve Filkin (Lotus Elise) |
Third John Owen (Swift SC92FF) |
Congratulations to John Bradshaw on winning the 2007 ALDON HSA Speed Championship in his Sylva Striker Toyota. Having swapped his old crossflow motor for a more powerful Toyota twin cam unit at the end of 2006 John was hoping for a more successful year in 2007. However, even John's expectations were exceeded as the new engine clearly suited both the car and his forceful driving style with class wins coming aplenty.
After finishing third in the 2006 Championship in his Honda Integra Type R Steve Filkin acquired Sponsor Alan Goodwin's Lotus Elise and quickly got to grips with his new mount and finished the year one place better moving up to second.
Another driver improving on his 2006 position was John Owen in his familiar Swift SC92 Formula Ford. Having finished sixth last year John went three places better to finish third in 2007.
Full results can be found here.

DALLARA’S DAY AT CURBOROUGH
15/10/2007
CURBOROUGH, October 14: For the second year running a Dallara F3 chassis took FTD at the HSA’s Alan Payne Trophy meeting, the last round of this year’s Aldon Speed Championship. Last year it was Paul Webster that set the pace, and in 2007 it was Andrew Platt’s turn as he broke one of the oldest records in the Curborough book, demolishing Peter Griffiths’ eleven-year-old record 2-litre racing record by fourteen hundredths.
With Jim Tatler in overall charge and Peter Curtis in charge of a healthy turnout of marshals, this slickly run event offered competitors three practice runs, two timed runs and an eighteen-car class winners’ run-off for the Alan Payne Trophy and saw competitors assembling for the prize presentation just after 4.00pm!
John Bradshaw, who had already secured the 2007 Aldon/HSA title at Loton Park’s penultimate round, was a non-starter, so the main Championship battle centered around second place honours and it was Steve Filkin who came through to grab the series runner-up spot, a class win securing the overall placing from the absent John Owen after a fine year in his ex.Alan Goodwin Lotus Elise. A record-breaking run to win the Modified Roadgoing Imp class – in which Stewart Cairney and Graham Cashmore also ran inside Duncan Batty’s 1998 record – secured a championship fourth place for Davrian pilot Mark Ibbotson, while class A1 winner Andrew Till bagged a series fifth overall in his MG ZR 105 to leave Simon Andrews to round off the top six in his MG TF.
Despite a close fought battle for the minor placings in the Alan Payne class winners’ run-off between runner-up Alan Goodwin’s Aldon sportscar and John Palmer’s Westfield-Puma, separated by a hundredth, Jonathan Plowe dodged the bullets in the rare Jensen Healey to bag the coveted award (which he will receive on our December 2nd awards presentation at Gaydon), a clear 0.34sec inside his class winning time.

Winning day for top three ALDON HSA Championship contenders
30/09/2007
At a dry and pleasant Loton Park on Saturday September 29th each of the top three runners in the ALDON HSA Championship put in excellent performances in pursuit of thier championship ambitions.
In a very hard fought Formula Ford class John Owen came out on top on his last run just pipping Richard Summers while Steve Filkin won the Roadgoing Production cars class.
However, it was John Bradshaw (pictured right locking up into Triangle), winning the smaller Specialised Production car class in his Striker Toyota who unofficially sealed the 2007 ALDON HSA Championship.
With 44 ALDON HSA Championship runners entered it was a successful and ejoyable day for many competitors.
Eynon Price set FTD in his OMS 2000M with a sub 50 second run.
Full report to follow in Speedscene.

FINE ALDON TURNOUT AT RECORD-BREAKING GURSTON
28/08/2007
With over 30 entries, the Aldon/HSA Championship class at Gurston Down’s August Bank Holiday Sunday British Championship hillclimb provided a fine prelude to each of the two top twelve run-offs.
Storming British Championship action on the fast Wiltshire hill saw the inevitable duel up front between series leader Scott Moran and Martin Groves, but this time Groves had the whip hand winning both rounds, resetting his hill record on the morning shoot-out and winning again in the afternoon for a maximum points haul of 22. Moran ran second each time as Groves ate into his lead in a series that looks increasingly like going down to the wire at Shelsley on October 7.
Records tumbled on one of the warmest days of the hillclimb year. As well as the hill record, Groves also reset his class mark in qualifying, Ed Hollier took a new 2-litre sports libre record to break clear of a tie with Paul Haimes at the head of the PowerMec Leaders table, Nic Mann lowered the big libre mark with another scintillating run in the astounding Mannic Beattie, while Sue Young and the Gould-Judd carved a whole second off Sandra Tomlin’s Gurston Ladies record.
With race cars not surprisingly setting the outright pace in the Aldon/HSA class, husband and wife team Morgan Jenkins and Amy Tomlin led the way in their OMS on 32.68 and 33.23 respectively. Surprisingly, it was Alan Goodwin’s first visit to Gurston but the Championship sponsor ran third in his Aldon AL3 on a mid-35. Championship second place man John Bradshaw brought the Toyota powered Striker home fourth overall, within a couple of tenths of Goodwin’s Ford powered sportsracer. Tony Jarvis in the ex.Moon ‘Pterodactyl’ FF Van Diemen RF84 collared fifth, but John Owen lost out in his Swift as Vincent Dubois elbowed the burly Nissan 200 SX through to ease the Aldon series leader out of the top six. Peter Roberts and the Jedi bagged eighth ahead of Martin Webb in the Van Diemen, while in tenth place was Simon Andrews rorty ex.MG X-Power Cup TF.
Mechanical misfortune befell the Wil Ker/Ben Hamer Mini turbo in practice and problems also struck Chris Jones’ Westfield, which ground to a halt on his first competition run. Will and Chris took no further part, but Ben made the event courtesy of a ride in Eric Morrey’s Clan, running a deferential six tenths behind the car’s owner!

Rob Barksfield
14/08/2007
Sadly we learnt over the week-end that Rob Barksfield (pictured right) had been tragically killed in a motorcycle accident whilst returning from a trip to the Nurburgring.
Rob was an active member of the BARC at Gurston Down where he holds the 1100 Class record in the Martin Ogilvie designed Saxon PCD. Having developed the car from scratch he set the new standard in 2004 leaving it at 28.93secs.
Rob will be missed by the whole of the speed events community and our deepest sympathy is extended to his family and close friends.

HSA MIRA JULY 14th
23/07/2007
After many wet events in the preceding weeks the competitors were thankfully greeted to a warm and bright MIRA. The rain stayed mercifully away and with few incidents, the slickly run event concluded after a class winners’ run off at about 4 o’clock.
Morgan Jenkins took his first FTD with a 47.82s in his OMS CF96 on what was generally regarded as a slower day although a couple of new class records were set.
Notable performance came from Steve Filkin and Mark Ibbotson who both set new records with Mark's new time nearly two seconds better than his own previous record!
Full report in Speedscene issue 145.

Shelsley
23/07/2007

During the night of 21st July an earth slippage brought the spectator pathway down onto the track in the area between the Kink and Bottom Ess. The Secretary, Hill Committee and contractors are currently involved in addressing the situation and a decision will be taken when the full extent of the damage is known.
Members, competitors and spectators are asked to check with this website on a regular basis for the latest news regarding the situation... Please keep telephone calls to the MAC office to a minimum to allow the situation to be dealt with.

Mannic Day at Shelsley
17/07/2007
Member’s day on July 14th at Shelsley and at last Nic Mann’s Mannic/Beattie realised its full potential. His startling run of 25.83 seconds not only created a new Shelsley Special record but also gave him BTD. As exciting was the 64ft time of 1.67seconds – instant acceleration with no apparent wheel spin! Runner up was Rob Stevens with an impressive 27.04 seconds in his Force SR4. Congratulations to both these HSA members.
Unusually for this season a sunny day and a dry track!

MORAN'S THE MAN AT HAREWOOD
09/07/2007
HAREWOOD, July 8: Only a small contingent of Aldon/HSA contenders travelled to Yorkshire for the Championship's first visit to the Harewood, but the venue drew universal praise from all concerned, who eagerly awaited their next visit to the longest and one of the most 'technical' hillclimbs in the British Championship. Stuart Cairney with the Imp and Steve Filkin in the ex.Alan Goodwin Elise were the only ModProd representatives among the 'A' licence contenders and were, perhaps not surprisingly, a little outgunned by the British Championship regulars that knew the tricky Stockton Farm venue well. But Aldon/HSA series leader John Owen took on Harewood's Formula Ford regulars with gusto and despite a second run spin acquitted himself well in the Swift SC 92, finishing second to one of the venue's top FFmen, Andrew Henson, in his later model Swift.
The dedicated class for HSA 'B' licence holders saw Eric Morrey in charge with the Clan. In a close battle with Vincent Dubois, he finished just 13 hundredths clear of the big Nissan SX. Emerson Kent was within a couple of seconds of the leaders in his Peugeot 205, and a similar margin clear of co-driver Chris Flavell, with Michael Tindale fifth in his 850 Clan. Unfortunately Tim Beardsley retired the Ginetta G15 from the fray on his first run.
Top man in the Nicholson McLaren British Championship lineup was series leader Scott Moran, who netted both run-off wins and FTD in his Gould-NME, with season-long rival Martin Groves having to settle for second place each time as the pair continue to head the championship table. Moran climbed within a quarter of a second of his hill record on a day that started wet and dried progressively, but which saw four new class records. Ed Hollier lowered his own sports libre mark in the OMS-Suzuki, then Brodie Branch demolished Mark Budgett's 1100 racing record in the Ian Dayson Force using rear suspension parts loaned by Russ and Chris Pickering, their Vision (with Force rear end), having been sidelined in practice after a wiring loom fire. Paul Haimes took 0.03sec off Trevor Willis's 2-litre record with the Dallara, while after Robert Kenrick had broken Phil Cooke's 1600 record - in the same car that held it a year ago - James Blackmore went one better to finally bag the new mark with a time that still, as before, outpaced the 2-litre record!
Photo gallery to follow soon.

Prescott June 24th
02/07/2007
Chris Merrick set the outright pace at a somewhat damp Prescott hillclimb as Aldon/HSA Speed Championship contenders made their annual visit to the Gloucestershire hill for the June Midland Championship round.
In the absence of several of the British Championship regulars, who were taking time off from a hectic schedule of no less than seven championship outings in as many weekends, the June Prescott invariably features a wide variety of cars in the Avon/ BMTR run-offs. Both Brodie Branch and his co-driver Darren Luke figured strongly in their Ian Dayson built Force-Suzuki, as did Rob Stevens’ rapid Force-Suzuki sports libre car, but it was Merrick and fellow British championship regular Trevor Willis that took the wins, with second and third placings for Simon Durling enough to give him the lead in the Avon/BMTR Challenge series in the absence of front-runners Scott and Roger Moran.
The 2-litre roadgoing sports car class contained the largest number of HSA championship entrants, with ten on hand in the 22 car class. In a typically close fought division, less than 4.5sec covered the top ten runners and while, as expected, Ash Mason continued his unbroken run of 2007 wins to maintain his place in the joint UK Changes Midland series lead, it was our own Chris Jones that ran him closest. In a last minute switch from his own Toyota powered Sylva Striker, Aldon/HSA Championship leader John Bradshaw shared the car with Chris, who elbowed his way through from fourth place in the wet morning runs to pip class regulars Ken Evans and David Uren.
Turbocars ruled in the ‘B’ licence class for Aldon/HSA contenders, Wil Ker and the Mini giving valiant chase to Vincent Dubois’ Nissan 200SX before the bigger car pulled out a lead of almost half a second for the win. Ben Hamer made it a one/three for the howling red and black Mini. Eric Morrey closed in with the Clan for fourth and in the battle for the final top six place, Peter Joy gladdened the hearts of Lotus enthusiasts as he hustled his superb Climax engined Lotus Elite past the Westfield-Vauxhall of Chris Child.

The ALDON AL3 visits Prescott
30/06/2007
Alan Goodwin bought his unique ADLON AL3 car, built for the F100 series over thirty years ago, to Prescott over the week-end of June 23/24.
After putting up some very respectable times on the the practice runs Alan managed to post a 51.76s on a still dampish course on the Sunday.

Not much to tell until now
19/06/2007
Well it's been a long time since I blogged anything; there are plenty of
excuses for this. Mainly because 3 of our good friends decided to get
married between March and June. This meant 3 stag dos, 3 weddings and
best man duties absorbed many weekend.
Also, the car only got returned to me from the body shop on 26 May and I
was then on holiday for a week. I've worked every hour available in the
last 2 weeks to get it all back together. A few modifications have been
put aside for the moment, but will hopefully be done after Prescott this
weekend.
Only the brakes to bleed and the suspension to set up now.
See you at Prescott if you're going

Unfortunately it now looks extremely unlikely that the planned sprint and ALDON HSA Championship round at Barkston Heath on 12th August will be able to go ahead.
Appologies to all those who were looking forward to competing there this year.

Records Fall at Shelsley
04/06/2007
In perfect conditions at Shelsley Walsh on Sunday, the MAC hosted their first National Championship round for 2007. Expectations of startling times on the new track surface were well founded. Scott Moran and Martin Groves traded hill records throughout the day with honours finally grasped by Scott in the closing runoff at 22.83sec.
There was plenty of excitement in most classes, too, with records falling everywhere: The 2-litre ModProd sportscar record fell to Ash Mason on 30.44sec, while the big saloon mark was reset by Roger Banks’ mighty Audi on 29.16sec after HSA member Roy Standley had already broken his existing record. David Tomlin moved the Ferrari record to 34.35sec, Tom Hammonds’ Shelsley closed car record finally fell to Mike Endean in his Puma on 28.06sec, the 1100cc race car standard was now in the 26second bracket, reset by George Brown on 26.83sec while the 1600cc race car record went to Chris Pickering on 26.08sec. Tom New set a new 2-litre record at 25.39sec and of course the unlimited race car record went too – to Martin Groves on 23.25sec. Among the Classics, HSA member Peter Cox reset the pre-85 mark to 28.84sec with the big Chevron-Rover and Classic Saloon/Sports cars to Kelvin Lee set a new Classic saloon/sports record with 31.62sec. Oh, and almost inevitably, Sue Young set a new outright Ladies’ record, leaving it at 24.73sec.
Just too much excitement for one day!

Peter Hubbard - Out of hospital and recovering
15/05/2007
As some of you will have heard Peter had a nasty off coming out of Top S in damp conditions at Shelsley Walsh on Saturday.
Peter's unique KBS turned sharp left into the fence and suffered extensive damage while Peter himself was taken to hospital for checks. He was released on Monday morning and is now at home nursing a few bruises.
Peter would like to extend his thanks to everyone at Shelsley for their effort and care.

Spring Shelsley 13th May 2007
15/05/2007
The first Shelsley for 2007 and for many HSA members a chance to drive the newly resurfaced track. General opinion was one of excellent and consistent grip, very smooth and good drainage, whilst the new surfaced loop road in the finish paddock made life easier for both competitor and marshal. Class wins by several HSA members and BTD to John Jones on 28.19sec in his Pilbeam MP82.
Saturday was a day of sunshine and showers, but almost perfect when compared with the meeting the following day which enjoyed continuous monsoon rainfall and for the final batches 100m visibility in the finish straight!

THE HSA AT RACE RETRO 2007
26/03/2007
The HSA's stand (pictured right) at Race Retro was once again the focal point for hillclimbers and sprinters visiting the popular annual Historic Motorsport Show at Warwickshire's Stoneleigh Park.
With the Brayspeed hillclimb DVDs playing throughout the three days of the show, many new and potential speed eventers visited the stand to find out just what our branch of the sport is all about, while in pride of place on the stand was Alan Goodwin's recently re-acquired Aldon sportsracer that he and business partner Don Loughlin originally built in 1970 for the short-lived F100 Formula, with BMC A Series power. After a successful circuit career over many years in several hands, Alan has bought back the now Ford Twincam engined car from long distance sportscar racer Phil Meaney Jr in the States, and intends to campaign it on the hills this season.
A big draw on Friday was the presence of motorsport legend Tony Marsh, who was on the stand (pictured left) to sign copies of his newly published autobiography - which sold like hot cakes!
It was the fourth successive, and successful, appearance at the show by the HSA. Our thanks to all those members who came along to help out on the stand over the three days, in particular to Fyrth Crosse, Alan Terry, Grant Cratchley and Pam, Peter Curtis, Alan Goodwin, Jerry Sturman, Dave Parr, Paul Richardson and Chris Bennett.

NEW EDITOR FOR SPEEDSCENE
21/03/2007
Jerry Sturman will be bowing out as the editor of Speedscene after the next issue, 143, which is due out in June.
'After 20 years and 105 issues, I think it’s now time to step down and let someone else occupy the Editorial chair', said Jerry. ‘Martin Price, who many of you will remember as editor of the popular "Ingear Motorsport" magazine and who currently edits "MAC News" has agreed to devote much of his own spare time to taking on this not inconsiderable task. He will, I’m sure, do a great job. All Speedscene’s regular writers and photographers, including myself, will continue to contribute to the magazine which I’m confident will continue to give unrivalled coverage of our sport. Good luck, Martin – and here’s to the 20 years!'

ALDON F100 Sport Car returns!
14/02/2007
The unique & historic 1970 ALDON F100 car is being brought back to the UK from America by Alan Goodwin. Click here for more details.
|
ALDON F100 COMES HOME
14/02/2007
In 1970 ALDON built an advanced monocoque sports car for the new F100 class (remember, at this time most racing cars outside F1 were of spaceframe construction)of sports racing cars. Powered by a 1300cc BMC engine, Alan Goodwin raced it in 1970 and after changing hands a few times it eventually finished up in the USA where, fitted with a powerful twin cam engine, it has recently been very successful (pictured right).
Now, after 37 years it is finally returning home, Alan having purchased the car at the end of last year and he is intending to enter it in a number of speed events in the UK once he has had a chance of checking it over.
You will be able to follow the story of this unique and interesting car here on these pages and there will also be major article appearing in a future issue of Speedscene.

The Start of the New Season
13/01/2007
So here we go with a blog of a year of hillclimbing and sprinting in a turbo charged mini.
Happy New Year to everyone (bit late).
If you don't know (and why would you) the mini got a bit damaged at Shelsley towards the end of the season. The picture was taken outside the body shop when I dropped it off a week or so ago, I am told it is now straight. The accident caused a few other things to get bent, but it will all be back together by the start of the season.
We're still chasing the elusive 160bhp, new pistons to cope and a new turbo should hopefully see us nearer the mark.
Cheers to everyone who's got in touch since this blog has been here, I look forward to seeing you all in a couple of months.

NEIL BENFIELD
23/12/2006
We are very sorry to have to report that Neil Benfield lost his battle with cancer on December 21st. As many of you will know, Neil was the driving force behind Borough 19 Motor Club for many years, a highly respected MSA Steward and a man whose contribution to club motorsport was immense. His personal negotiations saved North Weald as a sprint venue and more recently he worked tirelessly behind the scenes to bring Cadwell Park on stream for sprinting, culminating in last October’s event at the Lincolnshire venue that won the prestigious Les Edmunds Trophy for the best organized British Sprint round of 2006. Despite his illness, he refused to let this restrict his activities and had already secured the venue’s use for 2007 and was even in charge of the finish line for the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run on November 5th.
Neil was also closely involved with the HSA. He was a regular contributor to Speedscene and put a tremendous amount of work into our first event at Barkston Heath last August – even arranging for us to have all Borough 19’s safety equipment on loan for the event.
Neil Benfield was one of a kind. With his passing, club motorsport has suffered an immeasurable loss. Our thoughts are with his wife, Rosie, his family and all his countless friends and associates within the sport

Ben Boult retires as HSA President
13/12/2006
After many years of service to the Association as committee member, ALDON speed championship co-ordinator, chairman and finally president, Ben Boult, who as many members are aware, also has a very busy life outside the HSA, has decided, due to pressure of other activities, to relinquish all his responsibilites with the Association.
The committee, and we are sure the membership too, would like to thank Ben for his active and enthusiastic support of the Association over the years. We all wish him well in his subsequent endeavours.
An announcement regarding Ben's successors as president and championship co-ordinator will be made in due course.

THE 2006 ALDON/HSA CHAMPIONSHIP TOP 3
28/10/2006
First Sean McClurg (1.4 GSM Delta) |
 Second Chris Jones (1.6 Westfield-Vauxhall SE) |
Third Steve Filkin (1.8 Honda Integra Type R) |
Having campaigned the rare, South African built GSM Delta for many years now with great success, Sean McClurg had a fine Aldon/HSA season with seven wins, at MIRA, Goodwood and two each at Shelsley and Loton Park. With the championship already in the bag, a new Curborough record in the pre-76 Classic Roadgoing Sports Car class was the icing on the cake.
Like McClurg, the two drivers battling down to the wire for second overall in the series both took class wins at Curborough’s final round but here the tables were turned. Already with four wins (at MIRA, Debden and two at Prescott) on his slate and now dropping scores, Steve Filkin lay second on the Championship table. But only by a single point, from Chris Jones, as the series moved into the final round at the Staffordshire sprint course.
Despite adding another win to his previous tally, even Filkin’s fifth class victory of the season was not enough to stem the challenge from Jones. Already with a win at Shelsley and two each at Loton and Prescott, the hard charging Redditch driver made it a round half-dozen wins at Curborough. With no scores to drop, it was enough to snatch a last-gasp second place overall in the Championship.

WEBBO’S WINNER
16/10/2006
CURBOROUGH, Oct 15: Paul Webster scored his first ever FTD with a win at the HSA’s Alan Payne Memorial Trophy meeting.
The final round of the Aldon/HSA Speed Championship staged a battle up front between former Gurston Down Hillclimb Champion Webster, gaining valuable development time in his New Techniques engineered Dallara-Vauxhall F301, and OMS-Honda driver Barry Hunt, with Webster’s 29.55sec run getting the verdict by just seven hundredths of a second. Demolishing Graham Galliers’ Classic Racing Car record by over three seconds, Peter Cox took third FTD in his burly Chevron-Rover with the only other sub-30sec run of the day.
Already confirmed as 2006 Aldon/HSA Champion, Sean McClurg (pictured right at Prescott, courtesy of Steve Taylor) took a record-breaking class win in his rare South African built GSM Delta, but employing his hard charging sideways style to the full in the Cougar Westfield-Vauxhall, Chris Jones snatched the Championship runner-up spot on countback from Steve Filkin’s Honda Integra Type R as both drivers took class wins. The coveted Alan Payne Trophy for the best improvement in the single shot class winners’ run-off off went to Geoff Stallard, threequarters of a second inside his target time in the F3 Dastle Twincam.

Cadwell Park, September 16th/17th
22/09/2006
Sevenoaks & District Motor Club and Borough 19 Motor Club ran a 2 day Cadwell Park Speed Weekend over the 16th and 17th September.
In the words of Borough 19's Neil Benfield:
"Sadly the sea mist rolled in all day Saturday and just when we had perfect visiblity one of our competitors caught a wheel on the grass after the finish line and connected heavily with the tyrewall. The air ambulance transferred Kim Kingham to Lincoln hospital where she underwent treatment for a fracture in eah ankle before being sent home to get used to a wheel chair for a month. The Saturday sprint was halted owing to time restrictions.
The Sunday sprint was totally diferent with glorious sunshine all day. Jonathan Varley sideswiped the armco and was similarly take to Lincoln hospital but released that afternoon."
FTD on Sunday was narrowly taken by Matthew Oliver in his Gould with a 76.61s on a slighlty shortened course from the Saturday. Chris Aspinall in his Jedi MK4 missed FTD by a scant three hundredths of a second. Tony Jarvis (pictured right) just pipped shared driver Martin Webb by 0.06s to win the Formula Ford class in their Van Diemen RF84.
Thanks go to the two organising clubs and Motor Sport Vision for an excellent event at a wonderful venue.

ALDON sponsor returns to Cadwell
31/08/2006
Alan Goodwin, Aldon HSA sponsor, will be competing at the Cadwell Park meeting on 17th September for the first time for 40 years since he last raced there in the 1960's!
Then a mere strip of a lad Alan first campaigned a 1071cc Cooper S against the likes of John Fitzpatrick in the works Team Broadspeed cars.
Secondly in his rapid A.H. Sprite in the modsports events and thirdly in a F3 Lola coming second to ex F1 driver Peter Gethin.
Alan will be competing his Lotus Elise, if he can get it there as he needs to tow it for the first time.
The car will probably be outclassed against all the 2000cc & Westfields, Exiges etc. and with very low hillclimb gears but hopefully the journey will bring back many memories nonetheless.

Goodwood 19th August
22/08/2006
The BARC South Eastern Centre ran its annual Ian Bax memorial sprint meeting at the historic Goodwood circuit including rounds of the ALDON/HSA, PPC Magazine, ASEMC, TVR Car club and Sevenoaks Speed League championships on Saturday 19th August.
Competitors were greeted with overcast but pleasant conditions with the forecast rain staying away for the duration of the meeting. A virtually incident free day saw the usual complement of two practice laps and three timed runs completed by mid afternoon. A surprisingly small entry was reduced further by nine non appearances and five retirements following practice including ALDON HSA championship regulars Andrew Till, George Harris and Geoff Stallard; the latter with a broken driveshaft on his Dastle MK10.
FTD was taken by David Standing in his immaculate Toms 037F Formula Three machine with a 83.06s.

SIMON WINGS HIS WAY TO FIRST BARKSTON WIN
14/08/2006
Driving wind and rain did its best to put a damper on the first ever Barkston Heath Sprint in Lincolnshire, jointly run by HSA and the NSCC.
But competitors shunned the miserable conditions and stayed to the end, enjoying two practice runs and no less than four timed runs over the challenging new Lincolnshire course.
Despite the weather there was close class action and a fine battle for FTD. As heavy rain thwarted the single seater drivers' earlier bids it looked as though Paul Perkin, who had set the pace for most of the day in his ModProd Peugeot 205, was all set for top honours.
Then as the single seaters found a window in the weather, Simon Wing - who had never previously driven his Jedi in the wet - just pipped early spinner Jonathan Toulmin's Marengo by a mere four hundredths towards the end of the fourth runs to set the day's best time in 62.10sec.
A full report and pictures will follow in the next issue of Speedscene, out early October.

Curborough 11th June
12/06/2006
The Owen Motoring Club ran their Graham Hill Trophy Sprint and a round of the ALDON/HSA championship on the Curborough short course on Sunday June 11th in sweltering heat. Special thanks go to the marshals and officials for running an almost incident free day in the difficult conditions.
Ian Palmer took FTD in his Force with a 30.91s on a day when many personal best times were being set.
Also making another appearance was newcomer, Graham Boulter, in his pretty, immaculate and unique Kudos coupe with a 1700cc Alfa boxer engine. The fibre glass monocoque car was the subject to almost constant attention from onlookers throughout the day.

Anglesey Double Header
12/06/2006

Saturday saw 'Roy the Boy' Dawson notch his third win is as many rounds but on Sunday disaster! The Gould developed clutch problems and then the gear selector forks became bent.
Up stepped Stewart Robb to claim his first run-off win of 2006 and only his second ever British Sprint Championship maximum.

Double hat trick for Aldon engines
12/06/2006
At the Chester Motor Club's Anglesey Sprint double header over the week-end of June 10th/11th John Palmer (Westfield, pictured right at Loton last year), John Loudon (Westfield) and Mike Smith (RAW Striker) scored an unprecedented 1-2-3 on both days.
All three cars were running PUMA Zetec engines either built by ALDON or with parts supplied by ALDON in the up to 1700cc Kit Car class.
Over the same week-end ALDON/HSA Championship sponsor, Alan Goodwin, broke the 60 second barrier in his Lotus Elise (Pictured left at Prescott last year) at in the Midland Hillclimb Championship meeting at Loton Park on Sunday with a 59.95s.

MIRA 27th May
02/06/2006
The Midland Automobile Club ran its MIRA SPRINT meeting for the Midland Speed Championship, the Morgan Speed Championship and the Ferrari Hill Climb(?) Championship on the usual MIRA course on Saturday May 27th.
The weather for scrutineering and the first practice run was overcast but dry. Thereafter the threatened rain arrived and the remainder of the meeting was run in wet conditions to varying degrees. Despite the weather there were few incidents and the slickly run event concluded after a third optional, ‘fun run’ at about 4 o’clock.
Chris Aspinall was consistently fast all day in his Jedi MK IV and took FTD with a 51.92s on his second timed run. Such was his domination that his first timed run was good enough for second fastest run of the day.
Full report, as usual in Speedscene

Torbay MC Wiscombe 20th May
22/05/2006
Torbay Motor Club's inaugural Wiscombe Park hill climb was acclaimed as a resounding success on Saturday, with both competitors and club members enjoying a full day's sport despite the high winds and constant threat of rain.
Although the track control team had never operated together before at this venue, slick cooperation between the Clerk of the Course, John Hill, Rodger Harvey (the club's finance director) in track control, the timekeepers and marshals on the course ensured that every competitor was given the very welcome opportunity for an extra timed run in the afternoon.
Local single-seater ace Tony Wiltshire, from Newton Abbot, seized this chance to stamp his authority on the event, and for the third time this season powered his orange 2-litre Ralt RT34 up the hill to fastest time of the day, the only driver to better the 39 second barrier, leaving his class rivals in more powerful machinery trailing in his wake.
The award for the best Torbay Motor Club competitor was given to Stewart Lillington, from Chard, in his 2-litre Vauxhall Astra.
Dave Williams (Ford Escort) won the Marshal's Award, which is given by popular acclaim of the marshal's on the day, for 'entertainment value'!
The event, supported by Exeter Caravan Centre, was a qualifying round of the Torbay Speed Championship and the Bridge Tyres and Wheels Wiscombe Hill Climb Championship.
At the awards ceremony, Torbay Motor Club President Phil Drinkwater presented Don Hansford from the Devon Air Ambulance Trust with a cheque for £300, representing funds raised by the club at their events in 2005.

Wiltshire's Wiscombe
08/05/2006
Contrasting with the wet weather in 2005, this years first Wiscombe weekend on the 6th and 7th or May enjoyed dry and occasionally warm conditions for competitors. Both days saw the overall fastest time by Tony Wiltshire in his Ralt RT34, Saturday being slightly quicker on 38.62 sec.
Saturday saw the 3rd round of the Aldon/HSA Championship with a good turnout of contenders, the award for overall fastest HSA member going to David Watson in his Radical SR4 on 42.19sec although the welcome appearance of Bill Morris in his Pilbeam resulted in the fastest HSA contender time of 40.38 sec which gave him a class award.
The Championship continues on the 13th May at Shelsley Walsh and we look forward to seeing many of you in Worcestershire next Saturday.

2006 ALDON/HSA CHampionship
04/05/2006
What an excellent range of cars I see we have entered for this year’s Aldon/H.S.A. Championship. Keep them rolling in!
I know of several competitors who have promised to enter but haven’t yet including our very own salesman Steve Lane in his home built 1400 Fiesta to hopefully give Richard & Jamie Yapp some much needed competition. It’s his first year in speed events so lets give him a warm welcome.
Many of you have used our facilities over the winter so thank you very much and the best of luck for 2006.
Every customer means I can hopefully continue sponsoring the H.S.A. Championship for future years.
See you all around.

HSA MIRA Sprint April 22nd
23/04/2006
The HSA organised sprint at MIRA on Sunday April 22nd took place in cool, overcast conditions initially but later warming up to a pleasant spring afternoon. The three practice and two timed runs followed by a class winners run off proceeded uneventfully apart from a few 'start of season' mechanical gremlins experienced by some competitors including Roy Standley and Bob Gale.
Overall FTD was set by Phil Lynch in his RALT RT36 who commented that 'it was one of the best run events he had attended in years'!
The Championship points table has been updated with the results.

Barbon Hillclimb News
14/03/2006
Westmorland Motor Club’s Brian Whittaker informs us that the Club will be spending approximately £7500 in partial resurfacing of the track at Barbon Hillclimb in time for the British Championship event on 13 May. This will address the problem of the bump on the first straight, resurface completely Richmond Corner and do some minor patching. Brian would, however, like to point out that complaints relating to the surface were only brought to the Club’s attention via Tony Fletcher towards the end of last year, and that WMC would appreciate it if any comments about either the facilities or the track condition at Barbon were made direct to the Club and as soon as possible after a meeting has been held, so that the Club can programme the work effectively.
Also, Westmorland MC would like to thank sincerely Graham and Barbara Bracegirdle for all the work that they have done in connection with Barbon over the years. Graham and Barbara will be retiring from the position of Secretary of the Meeting at both Barbon events at the end of 2006, but this does cause a problem for the Club, which at the moment has no-one else in a position to take over the job. A similar problem also occurs in connection with Secretary of the meeting for the Motorcycle event held in June. If any Northern-based HSA members would be interested in the job, Brian Whittaker would be delighted to hear from them. He can be contacted at Short Haul, Old Hall Road, Windermere, LA23 1JA Tel: 01539 442434

Historic Motorsport Show
02/03/2006
The HSA stand at the third International Historic Motorsport Show held at Stoneleigh Park between February 24th and 26th received hundreds of visitors over the three days.
Members plans for the coming season were discussed and many enquiries were received. Most were of the usual variety of how to get started in Speed events but others were more unusual. For example there was the gentleman from Codemasters, the computer games company, who was interested in finding out about hillclimb venues for an upcoming game. He was likely to be a little diappointed though as the one track they have already modelled is Pikes Peak, Colorado and he wasn't expecting British venues to be so short!
All in all though, it was a very successful occasion for the HSA with Speedscene sales being particularly strong and new memberships and subscriptions being taken up.
Thanks should be given to Grant Cratchley for co-ordinating our presence and for the various members who contributed to the successful outcome.

HSA AWARDS PRESENTATION - GAYDON, November 20
21/11/2005
After a dominant year which included 24 wins and five new hill records, 2005 Nicholson McLaren British Hillclimb Champion Martin Groves received the Hillclimb and Sprint Association's Man of the Year award at the HSA's annual Awards lunch at Gaydon's Heritage Motor Museum.
The Association's annual British Hillclimb organisers' award, the Norrie Galbraith Memorial Trophy, went to BARC Southwest Centre for their running of the Gurston Down rounds in August, which Gurston C-o-C Simon Harratt accepted on behalf of the Club. First time winners of the Les Edmunds Memorial Trophy, presented to the top British Sprint organisers, Chester MC were the recipients for their Anglesey round in June, accepted by the event's C-o-C Bob Chesters and wife Jan.
Amongst the other special awards presented were the Peter Stevens Memorial Trophy which was won, appropriately enough, by Peter's son Rob for his record-breaking 2-litre sports libre year in his 1600cc Force-Suzuki. HSA Vice-President Russ Ward presented his own annual trophy to the spectacular Trevor Willis, after another giant-killing year in his OMS-Vauxhall.
The HSA's own Speed Championship has been sponsored for the eighth successive year by Aldon Automotive. Top class finishers and the overall top ten received awards, including 2005 champion Simon Gee who won the Aldon/HSA Championship trophy at the wheel of his Jedi Mk4. Force single-seater driver Jane Farthing took the award for the highest placed lady competitor, while the Ashton Mobile Service Over 60s Trophy went to Roy Standley, who also finished seventh overall in his Mitsubishi Evo. Ben Cox, a fine fourth overall in his Jamun FF and competing in his first year in the sport, took the HSA Newcomers' Trophy, while the Aldon/HSA Championships Man of the Year was enterprising VW Beetle driver Robin Judge.
